This meditation for chronic pain uses relaxation, breathing exercises and guided imagery with one goal in mind, to produce your bodyโs natural relaxation response to counteract the effects of stress and reduce pain. Relaxation techniques are safe for anybody to use and do not have the side effects of pain medication.
If you suffer with chronic pain youโll know the way it affects every part of your life. Acute pain is useful in telling you something is wrong. Chronic pain, on the other hand, is not so useful. It outlasts the original injury and gets in the way of carrying out your daily routines. This can lead to further frustration, anxiety and low mood. It makes your body sensitive than it needs to be.
Lady Gaga recently came out and talked about her fibromyalgia, a condition which is characterized by widespread chronic pain. In coming out about living with this condition she is one of the first celebrities to openly discuss living with chronic pain.
For so many years fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and ME have been on the fringes of medical fields. Mostly because many conventional medicines donโt help. Patients might get wrongly labelled as malingerers or difficult. Some, as my mum experienced, are told itโs all in their head.
But chronic pain is not just limited to these conditions. It can be any pain that lasts longer than three months. So includes an old back injury that plays up, rheumatoid arthritis, frequent headaches, IBS, Crohnโs disease etc.
Many renowned hospitals and clinics such as Cleveland clinic encourage patients to use relaxation techniques after surgery to reduce pain, reduce reliance on pain medication and to speed up recovery.
Iโve designed this guided meditation with the hope it will help you on your journey to healing chronic pain. Use it alongside whatever recommendations your doctor has given you, to help put you more in control of your symptoms.

I realize this LIVE recording cuts off, but I wanted to share this conversation from the clinic. My client was experiencing knee pain associated with a knee replacement performed last year. I am explaining that the knee pain she is feeling is not part of the knee replacement but may be associated with new movement patterns.

We all know what pain is. But why does it exist? And what’s it like to live with chronic pain? Made in partnership with @royalsociety #BBCIdeas

Humankind has constantly tried to define pain. It isn’t easy. Most of the pains that we feel are day-to-day. And they do resolve. They’re part of our body’s protection – making us rest and protect the area and make sure it doesn’t get infected if it’s a wound. And so day-to-day pain may be kind of annoying, but it is really important. A life without pain would be very dangerous and life-threatening.
Neuropathic pain is really intense. It’s experienced as almost real events, like being pinched and squeezed, very severe, what feel like electrical pulses. And clinical experts in pain are able to right away identify neuropathic pain because of these awful descriptors. The last kind of pain, the third kind of pain, is really the mystery. And that is the existence of pain for which there is no obvious origin. So that does not in any way mean that it isn’t real. It’s 100% real. It’s just that our understanding of our bodies is limited at the moment, and you can’t find an injury. So, we’re left with a population of people who are really suffering from pain, and it interferes with their life, but we don’t understand where it comes from.
Pain itself is a hidden disability. And it’s really difficult to get that across, because you can’t see somebody else’s pain. It’s absolutely exhausting. The outstanding mystery is why is it that a substantial number of our population are suffering from pain without any obvious biological purpose?

The Tracy and Ruth Storer Lectureship in the Life Sciences Presents “Natural Products as Probes of the Pain Pathway: From Physiology to Atomic Structure”
About the series: The Tracy and Ruth Storer Lectureship in the Life Sciences was established in 1960, to invite distinguished biological scientists to campus to present lectures and meet with faculty members and graduate students in their field of interest. Past Storer Lectures have included Nobel laureates, members of the National Academy of Science and acclaimed authors in medicine and the life sciences.
The Julius Lab is interested in understanding how signals are received and transmitted by the nervous system, exploring the properties of natural products to discover a family of thermo- and chemo-sensitive ion channels that enable sensory nerve fibers to detect hot or cold temperatures, or chemical irritants. With the aid of genetic, electrophysiological, and behavioral methods, they have determined how these ion channels contribute to pain sensation. Dr. Julius is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (honorary).
