Chronic pain meditation | Natural Pain Relief | Relaxation for Pain

pain No Comments »

This meditation for chronic pain uses relaxation, breathing exercises and guided imagery with one goal in mind, to produce your body’s natural relaxation response to counteract the effects of stress and reduce pain. Relaxation techniques are safe for anybody to use and do not have the side effects of pain medication.

If you suffer with chronic pain you’ll know the way it affects every part of your life. Acute pain is useful in telling you something is wrong. Chronic pain, on the other hand, is not so useful. It outlasts the original injury and gets in the way of carrying out your daily routines. This can lead to further frustration, anxiety and low mood. It makes your body sensitive than it needs to be.

Lady Gaga recently came out and talked about her fibromyalgia, a condition which is characterized by widespread chronic pain. In coming out about living with this condition she is one of the first celebrities to openly discuss living with chronic pain.

For so many years fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and ME have been on the fringes of medical fields. Mostly because many conventional medicines don’t help. Patients might get wrongly labelled as malingerers or difficult. Some, as my mum experienced, are told it’s all in their head.

But chronic pain is not just limited to these conditions. It can be any pain that lasts longer than three months. So includes an old back injury that plays up, rheumatoid arthritis, frequent headaches, IBS, Crohn’s disease etc.

Many renowned hospitals and clinics such as Cleveland clinic encourage patients to use relaxation techniques after surgery to reduce pain, reduce reliance on pain medication and to speed up recovery.

I’ve designed this guided meditation with the hope it will help you on your journey to healing chronic pain. Use it alongside whatever recommendations your doctor has given you, to help put you more in control of your symptoms.

Here is Part 2- the practice of somatic tracking for symptoms and feelings. This is can be used as a 10 minute guided daily practice. You can take the brain and nervous system training here and apply it to your day, especially when you notice yourself resisting, fighting with, or catastrophizing over your symptoms. This is real brain and nervous system training to change your neural patterns in relation to your body feelings and sensations.

The Pain PT was started by Jim Prussack, physical therapist. Jim works with people worldwide who are suffering from chronic pain and other chronic symptoms. You can find out more information about Jim, chronic pain, and his treatment program at www.thepainpt.com

Introduction Part 1: Somatic Tracking/Expression for Chronic Pain/Symptoms

One of the ways to access the mind-body connection for chronic pain and other chronic symptoms is to practice what we call somatic tracking. I have learned this technique from Dr. Schubiner, M.D. and Alan Gordon LCSW as well as from my experience in practicing Vipassana and mindfulness meditation. This is one of the simplest and most effective ways of combining the power of the mind with the body for healing. I go over some of the details here before you should review for entering the practice in Part 2- which is here:

Jim Prussack, physical therapist started The Pain PT to help people suffering with chronic pain and other chronic health ailments. The Pain PT uses mind-body techniques to target the brain and nervous system for healing. You can find out more at www.thepainpt.com
